This is something that I've done a while ago in photoshop. I've used photos that I got from the internet on my rough sketch and did a point over just to get the lighting and mood for the scene. This is more easy and interesting method to follow... instead of trying to get the lighting from the scratch.

The ant - process

I took the reference for this from a real photograph of an ant....I've used some real textures from google..I've also added some effects and filters to get the desired result....

Frog Process:

This one is also taken from a photograph...I've used some textures to fake the skin texture of the frog ....I've also used some filters and some blur effects to make it more appealing...

This is a matte painting experiment done in photoshop....
i've used this as a BG for my character that i've designed earlier ....

This is a character design that i've done in photoshop.....
i've used photo textures, fur brushes and filters to create this character.....I took lots of references and images from internet ....it took me around 2 days to complete this
